Overview
Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery is an original Hundertwasser architecture project. Absolute rationalism, geometric straight lines and the uniformity of modern architecture is abandoned in favour of new values like uniqueness, romanticism, individuality, creativity, especially creativity in harmony with nature. Hundertwasser created houses in which the creativity of nature meets human creativity. In keeping with his philosophy, the Hundertwasser Art Centre restores territories to nature with spontaneous vegetation, tree tenants and an afforested roof.
Notes for Cardholders
Hāpai Cardholders can enjoy a discount, now $20 (down from $25), and a free companion ticket for cardholders with +1 icon.
Standing and Queuing
Upon your arrival, please present your card to our staff, and we will provide you with a seat and place you in a virtual queue. We have wheelchairs and walking sticks available to use (no charge). There are seats around the building, and we also offer to have someone bring a collapsible seat out to specific areas if required for different activities.
Level Access
Our building has level access throughout and 3 lifts, including an exterior chair lift to the viewing platform. There are disability car parks, which are as close as possible, but still a short walk to the front door. There are uneven floors in the building, but there are flat areas in all sections. No area is inaccessible due to uneven floors (which are mostly near the walls). Our afforested roof has some paved areas and some areas of loose bark, which might be challenging for some chairs. The paved path is swept frequently for debris.
Distances
Our building is large; however, there is plenty of seating throughout that you are welcome to use. We have onsite wheelchair(s) available for you to use, which can be booked in advance, or you can speak with one of our team members when you arrive, and they will do their best to assist you. We have many bench seats, as well as wheelchairs and walking sticks, available for the public to use (no charge).
Urgent Toilet Access
We have accessible toilets on every level of the building. We do not usually have guests queuing for the toilets. However, if it is unusually busy and we are presented with this card, we can discreetly radio staff to inform them that there is a guest in the building requiring prioritized access. The staff will be prepared to provide support.
Disability Assist Dogs
We comply with the NZ law with respect to Disability Assistance Dogs. The staff will offer you water for your dog and will indicate the nearest place (afforested roof) for the dog to relieve itself.
Essential Companions
For cardholders with this icon we are happy to offer a free companion ticket. In order to book this please give us a call on (09) 430 4230
Difficulty Accessing Visual Information
Through the Training, the staff are well-informed about adapting their communication and assisting individuals who are blind or have low vision. They can assist you to a seat and guide you a seat / Toilet if required. We have an audio guide available free of charge to visually impaired guests as well as illiterate adults, etc. facing barriers to reading a text panel or engaging with staff for further information.
Difficulty Accessing Audible Information
Through the training that the staff have done with the Hāpai Access Card, they are aware of how they can modify how they communicate with you. This includes making sure you can see their face when speaking, speaking clearly, use of pen and paper and being patient. The staff are aware of the NZ Relay service, so please use this if you think it appropriate when ringing if needed.
Hidden Disabilities
Through the staff's training, they are generally aware of hidden disabilities. Please speak to them about how they can assist in making your time with us extraordinary.
