Overview
The Dorothy Butler Children's Bookshop is a much loved Auckland institution and one of the only specialist children's bookshops in the city. We have one of the largest selections of quality children's books in New Zealand, and a fantastic range of educational toys, puzzles and games.

Standing and Queuing

We have some seating available in the shop. We can bring a stool or chair for the cardholder to use while waiting for a staff member or when looking at products in the shop.
Level Access

We have a ramp between the two different levels of the shop. There is sufficient space for wheelchair access to most areas of the shop. Staff are able to open the entry door to help with access to the shop.

The closest Mobility Cardholder carpark is about 60 m from the courtyard (rear) entrance to the shop.
Urgent Toilet Access

Customer toilet facilities are available 5 meters from the shop door: Male (2), Female (2), Accessible (1). Please ask staff for the access code to the toilets.
Disability Assist Dogs

We comply with the NZ law with respect to Disability Assistance Dogs. We have a water bowl available for dogs in our outside courtyard.

Difficulty Accessing Visual Information

Through the Training, the staff are well-informed about adapting their communication and assisting individuals who are blind or have low vision. They can help you looking for books, assist you to a seat and guide you to the toilet if required.

Signage is present throughout the shop. Pens and paper are available for communication if needed. Staff, trained with the Hāpai Access Card, know how to adjust their communication methods. This includes ensuring you can see their face when speaking, speaking clearly, and being patient.
Hidden Disabilities

Outside seating in the courtyard is available if the shop environment becomes too noisy. Staff, trained to recognize hidden disabilities, are generally aware of how to assist. Please speak to them about any specific needs you may have to ensure an extraordinary experience with us.
