"Designed, built and run by a team of Kiwi climbers and yoga teachers, Uprising is home to a huge bouldering gym, yoga studio and a fitness gym all under one roof. There’s even a café serving our own signature blend of locally roasted coffee, and a pro shop for apparel and gear. And before you say, “that is clearly not for me, I have a disability” think again, we are keen to have the opportunity to show you what you can do. Let’s face it, where else do you have a lovely spongy floor that cushions any fall. Bouldering is a challenge by choice activity, soon to hit the Olympic stage and we are keen to have the opportunity to start your bouldering journey at Uprising. No ropes, no harnesses, no limits. Bouldering is as much a challenge for the mind as it is the muscles; figuring out how to get from A to B takes strength, strategy and problem-solving skills. It’s an activity for all ages and all abilities. If fitness is your goal, bouldering is an exciting alternative to a typical gym routine. It offers a full body workout that’s different every time and combines resistance and aerobic training. But it’s just as great for anyone simply looking for an activity that comes with a great social aspect and a sense of achievement. Do it solo, with mates or as a group activity with your work or sports team or even a party crowd. Bouldering is a very sociable activity and our new facility is purpose-designed to support and encourage the growing climbing community we have here in Canterbury. Our Blocland area is a great spot for young children to gain movement skills and confidence. Blocland is separate to our main climbing area and is designed for smaller children up to the age of 13. "
Notes for Cardholders

If you have any questions about access or the activity please do give us a call before coming so we can offer you the best possible experience. There is lots of information on our website and you are welcome to fill out the registration form before you come as it saves you some time. There is an intro video to watch that will prepare you for the visit and most importantly explain the safety rules. We are so keen to have you here that we have a tremendous offer for when you wave that Hāpai Access Card at us:
- $2 off any standard entry.
- Free gear hire – climbing shoes and chalk – all you need to get on the wall!
- If you have the “+1” symbol on your card your essential companion gets free entry.
- And if that wasn’t enough to make you feel welcome we are going to give you 20% off hot drinks in our cafe!

Now with all that good stuff how can you stay away.

Want a quieter time?
From 7am to 4:30pm on weekdays and after 5pm on weekends are our quieter times. Oh, and we like to keep things fresh and exciting, so we use Mondays to create new climbs which involves drill use and can be noisy.

Standing and Queuing
Queuing should not be an issue. If there is someone at the counter just take a seat in the ground floor cafe area and wave your Hāpai Access Card at us and we will come to you.
Level Access
Ok, let us be honest, bouldering in a wheelchair is a challenge, so you are going to have to leave it behind! We don’t have any pulleys or ropes that would assist your bouldering because then it wouldn’t be bouldering. So you will need to be able to climb with just your arms. If you are cool with that, then go for it. We don’t have enough staff to provide you with a dedicated support person, but we are a community, and we would look to find you a buddy. If you have a “+1” barrier icon on your card, your essential companion will get free entry. Our soft pads are not able to accommodate a wheel chair. When considering bouldering it is important for anyone bouldering to only climb as high as they are comfortable with, falling off is all part of the activity, as the mats do not guarantee a safe landing. We provide a personalised safety briefing including fall practice for every new climber, and whilst we cannot provide a team member to work with you for the duration of your visit bouldering is a social activity and we would look to introduce you to a buddy. If you have a “+1” barrier icon on your card your essential companion will get free entry. In terms of getting around, wheelchair access is good in most parts of the ground floor, but there is one area that might be a squeeze if you have a particularly wide chair. Now we are going to apologise upfront for the location of the disabled parking which consent design required us to put in one corner of the car park, there is a slight slope to one of the parks. As we continue our journey to making Uprising more accessible, we will be looking into how we can improve the accessibility parking. In the meantime if you ring ahead we would try to reserve you a space near the front door - it is flat there too. The staff are keen for you to get the most out of your visit. If you come across any limitations during your time with us let us know, however please accept the staff’s decisions about what is possible and safe, both for you and are other customers.
There is a short distance between the disabled parking spaces provided and the entrance. Everything is close once you are inside, although the safety matting in the bouldering area is spongy so it is not the easiest surface to walk on. The Purple Line bus stop right outside the facility.
Urgent Toilet Access
There are two accessibility bathrooms, with showers, and four extra toilets throughout the facility.
Disability Assist Dogs
Certified assistance dogs are permitted, and we do also allow well behaved non-assistance dogs who tend to hang around the ice cream freezer.
Essential Companions
There is no charge for an essential companion. We just need to see that “+1” icon on your card. It is expected that this person will assist staff when asked.
Difficulty Accessing Visual Information
There is a fair amount of visual information in the facility. Our friendly team of staff can help with menus and pricing descriptions. Bouldering with a +1 or buddy can be useful as they can help to keep your landing zone clear and help you identify which color you are holding.
Difficulty Accessing Audible Information
Bouldering and Yoga are two things that you cannot really rush. We like to get to know our customers, so we are used to taking our time, please be assured that we will take our time with you to explain ourselves. Unfortunately, we cannot offer signing but all our safety induction videos are audio described.
Hidden Disabilities
We will do our best to help you if you have other disabilities, and we are keen to learn, so help us if you can do better by telling us what might help you have a better experience. Want a quieter time? From 7am to 4:30 pm weekdays and after 5 pm weekends are our quieter times. We like to keep things fresh and exciting so we use Mondays to create new climbs which involves drill use and can be noisy.
