Overview
The Whangārei Art Museum is Northland's public art gallery, and the permanent home of the city's art collection, which embraces both heritage and contemporary artworks. Whangārei Art Museum hosts touring and internally curated exhibitions, showcasing artistic excellence from Northland, New Zealand and the world
Notes for Cardholders
Our spaces are always free to the public. Guided tours and workshops are available but booking is essential. If you are attending specific paid workshops or activities, your essential companion is welcome to join at no extra cost.
Standing and Queuing

Hāpai Cardholders can present their card to one of our staff. You can take a seat and we'll place you in a virtual queue. Collapsible seating is available on request, and bench seats are available in our retail space.
Level Access

We have a wheelchair and a mobility scooter available onsite, if required at any time. Booking either of these in advance is advised to ensure availability for your visit. All of our galleries and community spaces are located on the ground floor and are level throughout. There are two accessible car parks right beside the building. In front of our foyer, there is a large, level courtyard that connects to the rest of the Town Basin.
Distances

We have a wheelchair and a mobility scooter available onsite, if required at any time. Booking either of these in advance is advised to ensure availability for your visit. You can book these via our email or phone number listed in the contact information section.
All of our galleries and community spaces are on the ground floor, and the area is level throughout. There are two accessible car parks beside the building, approximately five meters from the front doors. In front of our foyer, there is a large, level courtyard that connects to the rest of the Town Basin.
During your visit to the gallery, we have seating available in our foyer and retail space, and we can also provide a chair inside the galleries upon request.
Urgent Toilet Access

Our bathrooms are available to the public at any time during our opening hours and include accessible stalls.
Disability Assist Dogs

We comply with New Zealand law regarding Disability Assist Dogs. All registered Disability Assist Dogs are permitted entry to the business venue. Accepted proof of registration includes either presentation of the visitor’s Hāpai Access Card displaying the icon shown above or presentation of registration documentation along with the dog wearing its relevant service jacket (coat, vest, or harness).
We are able to provide your dog with water on request and have two grassed areas at the front of the building that they can use as a bathroom. A quiet space to sit can also be provided upon request.
Essential Companions

Our museum is free of charge, and everyone is welcome. If you are attending specific paid workshops or activities, your essential companion is welcome to join at no extra cost.
Difficulty Accessing Visual Information

We always have staff available at the front of house to explain any signage and to guide you to the areas of the museum you would like to visit.
Difficulty Accessing Audible Information

We have paper and pens available on request and staff on site to support any questions.
Hidden Disabilities

We are able to provide a quiet space on request. Booking ahead is preferred but accommodations can be made at any time.
