Overview
Barry Brickell’s vision of a communal pottery—where young apprentices could be trained working alongside experienced potters—was supported by the Arts Advisory Council with a very modest grant to build the two-storey studio, kitchen, and bunk room. The grant ended up covering only the design, engineering, and some materials, so it was necessary for Barry to use second-hand materials from wherever they could be found, and to lean on the local bank—beginning a 30-year relationship.
Word of the pottery spread along the hippie trail, but Barry was strongly averse to Driving Creek being labelled a ‘hippie commune’. Only potters and others who worked for the privilege to stay were accepted. This led to the construction of a kitchen, bunk room, two-storey poled studio, and engineering workshop.
Barry built New Zealand’s first wood-fired stoneware kiln—which could reach 1300°C—using bricks from the chimney of the demolished local Star and Garter Hotel. He fueled the kiln with wood off-cuts from the local sawmill and non-native trees from the property. Potters who used oil, gas, and electric kilns visited Driving Creek to learn the gentle art of wood firing.
Notes for Cardholders
Anyone who requires support to visit Driving Creek will receive a support person ticket free of charge. Any Hāpai cardholder who does not require a support person will receive a 10% discount on all Railway Tours. Bookings are essential and must be made by phone, so please let us know if you require this assistance.
Standing and Queuing

We have two points of sale where we can assist you with purchasing a pottery class and checking in on busy days. There are seats throughout Driving Creek for you to rest, and all our pottery classes are done on a wheel in a seated position. It’s always best to let us know when you make your booking if you have difficulty with standing and/or queuing, so we can be prepared to greet you and bring you to the front of the line if needed.
Level Access

Wheelchair access to our pottery classes can be arranged with prior notice—please contact us to discuss your needs.
Distances

For those who have difficulty crossing distances, our accessible car park is located approximately 30m from our ticketing office.
Our customer service staff may allow visitors to drive up to the ticketing office for drop-offs and pick-ups if necessary on the day, depending on accessible parking availability. This option is available if other accessible parking options are not suitable, so please let us know during your booking if you require this assistance.
There is seating where boarding takes place, throughout the Driving Creek property, and many of our viewing points are visible from a seated position.
Urgent Toilet Access

We have two sets of toilet blocks onsite: one flush toilet approximately 30 meters from the ticketing office, and one composting toilet at the top where the Rail Vehicle ends. Both sets of toilets are wheelchair accessible. We also have an emergency composting toilet (Chipmans or Hoki Mai) halfway up the track; however, these particular toilets are not wheelchair accessible.
Disability Assist Dogs

We comply with New Zealand law regarding disability assist dogs. All registered disability assist dogs are permitted entry into Driving Creek and into our pottery classes. Customer service staff can provide a water bowl for your dog and direct you to a place where your dog can relieve themselves upon request. We ask that you let us know during your booking if you require this assistance so we can inform other customers that a disability assist dog will be present in that class.
Essential Companions

Anyone who requires support to visit Driving Creek will receive a support person ticket free of charge. Any Hāpai cardholder who does not require a support person will receive a 10% discount on all Railway Tours. It is essential that you let us know when making your booking if you require this service.
Difficulty Accessing Visual Information

This activity may not be suitable for cardholders with this icon, as it requires visual ability.
Difficulty Accessing Audible Information

Most of our information is delivered verbally during pottery classes; however, we provide visual information pamphlets at check-in to support your understanding. We also offer Driving Creek Railway & Potteries: The Unique World of Barry Brickell, a subtitled movie that introduces you to the amazing work done at Driving Creek Railway. Additionally, your pottery tutor will provide demonstrations to assist with the audible information.
We recommend allowing 20–30 minutes before your departure time to carefully watch the movie.
Hidden Disabilities

All Driving Creek staff are first aid trained and can assist with anything from someone who may have overexerted themselves to extreme events such as heart attacks, seizures, and people collapsing. Driving Creek is a 24-hectare area where all staff carry radios and can communicate throughout the property to coordinate any assistance you might need. We kindly ask that you let us know during your booking if relevant needs are not visible or are likely hidden, so Driving Creek staff can draft a sensory map to guide people who are sensitive to sounds, smells, and crowds, helping them prepare for or avoid different stimuli throughout the Driving Creek experience.
