Overview
"The War Memorial Theatre is a state of the art 500-seat theatre in the heart of Gisborne, New Zealand. Originally built as a community dance hall, it opened in 1957, was converted into a theatre in 1975, and redeveloped in 2015. War Memorial Theatre is a Proscenium arch, with raised stage, fly tower, orchestra pit, grand piano and full technical capabilities. Six well appointed dressing rooms with toilets and showers, and backstage green room with kitchenette. Loading dock. Catering kitchen. Fully accessible. Seats 362 in the Stalls and 138 in the Circle. Fully air conditioned, with licensed bar. The stunning foyer, featuring the "Field of Poppies" ceiling, is available to book for functions and events."

Standing and Queuing

We will ask you to take a seat and place you in the virtual queue. When the auditorium opens, you will be brought in first and personally escorted to your seat.

There are accessible carparks in front of the venue, subject to availability. There is no lift in the venue.

Our building is large, however, there is plenty of seating throughout that you are welcome to use. We have one onsite wheelchair between 2 venues. This can be booked in advance by emailing halls@gdc.govt.nz. There are no accessible carpark spaces near the venue. There are carparks in front of the venue, subject to availability. There is a carpark across the street approx 50m with 90 spaces.

Our toilets are gender neutral which means people may use the toilet of the gender that they identify as. If you present this icon to us we will ensure you are next to use the toilet in a discrete way.

We comply with the NZ law with respect to Disability Assistance Dogs. The staff will offer you water for your dog and will indicate the nearest place for the dog to relieve itself.

Through the training, the staff are well-informed about adapting their communication and assisting individuals who are blind or have low vision. They can help you with the Bar menu, assist you to a seat and guide you to the theatre / toilet if required. Please notify staff to receive additional assistance.
Difficulty Accessing Audible Information

Hearing Loops are installed in War Memorial Theatre, so hearing aids with this feature can be tuned in to it. Through the training that the staff have done with the Hāpai Access Card, they are aware of how they can modify how they communicate with you. This includes making sure you can see their face when speaking, speaking clearly, use of pen and paper and being patient. The staff are aware of the NZ Relay service, so please use this if you think it appropriate when ringing if needed.
