Overview
Ngā Kete Wānanga o Ōtautahi | Christchurch City Libraries are all about connecting people, inspiring discovery and enriching communities. We provide programmes, facilities and resources, so that you can access a world of ideas and imagination. You can use our spaces to study, create, have fun or meet with other people. Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre is located on the corner of Wakefield Avenue and Nayland Street, in. It is 650 metres from Sumner Esplanade and is across the road from the Sumner skatepark. Our facility has two stories with the library located on the ground floor and bookable community rooms and the Sumner Museum located of the first floor. Our collection includes books, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks, Ngā Pounamu Māori and children’s collections. We have a suite of six computers that are for public use. Free wi-fi is available throughout Matuku Takotako. The Museum is run by volunteers and usually opens Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. You can call the library to confirm they are open.
Notes for Cardholders

We can offer concession memberships to Hāpai Access Card Holders which include extended borrowing times and waiving of usual fees associated with our Audio-Visual collections: DVDs, CDS and Talking Book items and certain items for hold requests.

Your support person has free access to any paid activity that you are attending.

Standing and Queuing

Our staff are always available to help. You can come and talk to us or call out and we will come to you. Seating is available throughout the library and there are couches, armchairs and seats available in the atrium.
Level Access

Level access is via the entrance off Nayland Street. There is a loading zone by the Nayland Street entrance where people can be dropped off close to the entrance, but cars cannot park in the loading zone and must be moved to the carparks after drop off. There is a disabled car park outside the Sumner Medical Centre 50 metres form the Nayland Street entrance. There is another disabled carpark on Nayland Street 60 metres from the Wakefield Avenue entrance. There is general carparking available along Nayland Street. The Wakefield Avenue entrance has steps but there is a lift that can take you from the foyer into the building. Access to the first floor is either the elevator or 2 flights of stairs.

Urgent Toilet Access

There are toilets throughout Matuku Takotako, in the atrium there are two unisex toilets and a unisex disabled toilet. In the library there is a toilet at the Nayland Street end by the children’s area, and upstairs there are men’s toilets with 2 stalls and two urinals and women’s toilets with 3 stalls. There is a unisex disabled toilet on the first floor.

Assistance dogs are very welcome in the library, we have a water bowl available and staff are happy to provide water for assistance dogs.
