Overview
"Nau mai, tautī mai. Welcome to the Okains Bay Museum Visit a very special museum at the heart of historic Kawatea Okains Bay, gifted to the people of Aotearoa New Zealand by founder Murray Thacker Q.S.M. in 1977. You will enjoy the relaxed environment as you learn about life on Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula and Aotearoa New Zealand in former times. Nationally significant taonga Māori and early Pākehā items are among the exciting range of treasures on display in the museum’s diverse complex of heritage buildings."
Notes for Cardholders

The museum offers a concession for Hāpai Access Cardholders and Essential Companion entry. Please visit https://okainsbaymuseum.co.nz/ for details.

It is recommended that visitors dress for visiting an outdoor museum. Paths are uneven, gravelled or grassed, so please wear covered comfortable shoes and watch for trip hazards. Also, please be aware that the museum's internal spaces are not temperature controlled.

If required, umbrellas are available from the ticket office. Umbrellas must not be taken into the collection spaces, please leave them outside the entrances.

Please email the museum regarding any particular accessibility needs prior to your visit so the staff can work with you to maximise your visit and experience at the museum.

Note:
Currently, Okains Bay does not have potable water so we do not recommend drinking tap water. Fresh drinking water is brought into the museum and is available free from the museum tearoom located at the front of the Colonial Hall.
